West Virginia Apprentice Organizer

Mid Atlantic · Charleston, West Virginia
Department Mid Atlantic
Employment Type Temporary - Full Time
Minimum Experience Mid-level
Compensation $32,000 to $42,000

Job Summary

WFP is building a national party of the left. We’re investing in building the base our country needs. WFP Organizers are part of a cadre of skilled organizers who help us build membership and elect transformative leaders to office. At WFP, we are working to develop organizers who can successfully integrate electoral, relational and digital organizing. The Apprentice Organizer is a junior staff person who will receive training, mentorship, and work with the West Virginia team to demonstrate that they can produce as an Organizer.

The period as an Apprentice Organizer is meant to allow the ideal candidate to experience direct organizing full time and to practice the organizing craft intensely. Our expectation is that Apprentice Organizers will use their time wrestling with the questions of whether the vocation of organizing is a good fit for them and whether WFP is their political home.

The Apprentice Organizer will be introduced to the WFP Organizing Model:

  • Individual meetings, also known as relational meetings, as a means to create connections
  • Membership recruitment
  • Cultivating radically welcoming and engaging spaces
  • Political thinking and judgment
  • Teaching, coaching, mentoring, and training of leaders
  • Personal progressive ideological development and radical education
  • Organizing money

This is a temporary position currently scheduled to end in December 2021. We are also hiring an Organizer. Please visit that role and apply to that position if you believe it would be a better fit for your experience level.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a regular schedule of relational meetings each week with current and potential members, volunteers, allies, partners, community leaders, candidates, electeds and their staff, donors, and other stakeholders to expand the Working Families Party’s base of support, build teams of local leaders, and identify new opportunities to act
  • Support the West Virginia team with digital events such as phone banks, text banks, welcome gatherings, town halls, and public endorsement events
  • When it becomes safe to do so, assist with hosting regular in-person membership meetings, trainings, mass meetings, canvasses/door knocks, text parties, house parties, and other tactics that gather supporters and members, help elect WFP candidates, and build the party
  • Support the day to day work of the West Virginia team as they connect with key leaders (institutional leaders and rank and file, individual supporters and members, and movement leaders) teaching, coaching, mentoring, and training them, and helping to build their commitment to WFP
  • Assist with the ongoing work of fundraising including but not limited to raising money from membership, individual donors, institutional contributions, and national and local grants
  • Invest in your own political and ideological development
  • Track the actions of volunteers, supporters, and members and their leadership development in WFP’s Constituent Relationship Management platform (EveryAction) and Mobilize.us
  • Assist with training and political education for members and volunteer leaders
  • Recruit, engage, and motivate the WFP base in coalition with aligned organizations by identifying and developing volunteers

Skills & Qualifications

  • A year of previous organizing or relevant experience
  • General comfort with Google Workspace and Social Media, and a willingness to dig in and learn to use digital organizing tools such as CRMs, Mobilize, online event management platforms, video conference tools, and similar digital organizing tools
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including particularly strong listening skills
  • The ability to work independently and hold yourself accountable in a remote, entrepreneurial work environment
  • Experience working with diverse groups of volunteers and supporters across all demographics and backgrounds — especially race, gender and class
  • Pre-existing commitment to progressive politics or community issues

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • A cycle of electoral campaign experience
